This huge country comes back with a bite in the spring offering tonnes of amazing places to visit just before it gets a little too hot. These are just some of my personal favourite places to visit in spring in Canada that you could consider visiting come April, May and June. I love the country! Of course, all thoughts and words my own. The annual snow of winter has melted away, and the city is ready to enjoy being outside again.
Expect things to warm up as we come in April although you can enjoy warmer temperatures from March. I went to Vancouver in June once and the weather was fantastic for sightseeing. Warm, bright, sunny, but with a nice crisp air too.
I think this is a great time to visit Vancouver. You can opt to keep it chill with a brisk walk around Stanley Park or a wander around Granville Island, or you can ramp it up a gear with a hike up Grouse Grind. With the Rocky Mountains as a backdrop the town itself is just breathtaking and once the snow has melted you can get in some good hikes along the likes of Fenland Trail, Sundance Canyon and the Bow River Trail.
With warmer than average temperatures, British Columbia is my go-to province for spring hiking. Nova Scotia is a close second, with the ocean breezes keeping temperatures warmer here than elsewhere in the Maritimes. Keep in mind that mud, slush, slippery rocks and the occasional patch of snow are unavoidable hazards for spring hiking anywhere. As the temperatures on land start to warm, so do the ocean waters.
This is most apparent in Tadoussac, Quebec , where up to eleven species of whales return to the area in spring in addition to the two that stick out the winter here. Whale watching tours in Nova Scotia begin in May, with humpbacks being commonly seen from June onwards. Tofino in British Columbia has a particularly long whale watching season, with tours starting as early as March. Whale watching in spring offers quieter tour boats and less boats on the water in general.
It is always colder on the ocean than on land. Touring wineries is a great activity to do at any time of year but spring is a particularly good time in the Okanagan Valley, British Columbia. Spring starts early here, with temperatures reaching 28c as early as May. The Okanagan Valley is home to over vineyards and counting. One particularly beautiful area, the Naramata Bench, has over 40 boutique wineries easily accessible from one 20km stretch of road.
Spring is the perfect time to take advantage of sunny days, quiet tasting rooms and just released vintages. A cool glass of Sauvignon Blanc on a sun baked Okanagan patio overlooking the lake is definitely a spring treat!
Besides Easter, the major Canadian holiday in spring is Victoria Day. In , Victoria Day is 20th May and in , it will be on 18th May. For many families, Victoria Day is traditionally the first weekend to go camping. For others, it simply means an extra day off and a sign that summer is around the corner.
Some cities such as Toronto and towns put on firework displays. Victoria Day has been observed in Canada since at least and is designated a holiday in one way or another in every province and territory with the exception of Quebec.
Canada has some fantastic opportunities for spring travel, from coast to coast to coast. Here are a few of my favourite destinations:. Canada is a huge country and, as such, as the weather has fairly big regional weather variation in spring.
It also depends on the year. In general, however, spring considered sprung across the country around May. Warm temperatures can be felt as early as March. Winter continues to hold for much longer in the Rockies, with snow still falling in April and the famed glacial lakes often frozen until late May.
It keeps winters a little warmer and summers a little cooler but you can still expect springtime to start around early May. Ever wanted to go iceberg watching? The best time to view icebergs passing by Newfoundland is in the spring and early summer as they drift south from the Arctic.
In Iqaluit, April days are already 16 hours long and often sunny with the daily maximum of degrees. After a long Arctic winter the residents celebrate the arrival of spring with Toonik Tyme, a week-long cultural festival in April where the days are filled with fun, games, music, competition and feasts.
Sea unicorns, or Narwhals surface during spring migration outside Pond Inlet, Nunavut. They calf in late spring during the northbound migration. It is an amazing experience to see these incredible mammals. Narwhals surfacing Photo: Paul Nicklen. Like some help from a travel planning specialist?
Spring is a scenic time of year to explore the Rockies as snow melts and wild roses, buttercups and fireweed carpet the valleys and plains. The sound of birds chirping gaily, the light patter of squirrels scampering across branches, water flowing lazily through streams or trickling down a mountain reminds me of happy spring days in the Canadian sunshine where everything feels fresh. The season teases out my inner child because I love being outdoors, exploring new places and meeting new people.
